Normal Skin

At birth, most babies' skin will fall into one of five categories, or types:

• Normal
• Dry
• Sensitive
• Very sensitive
• Eczema-prone

The normal skin type has several characteristics that set it apart from dry and sensitive skin:

• It's soft
• It's supple
• It's silky to the touch
• It has no irregularities
• It has no obvious signs of dryness or sensitivity

This skin type is what you may think of when you hear the phrase as smooth as a baby's bottom. But as your newborn grows, they may experience a variety of different skin types depending on the weather, their environment, and other factors.

The best way to determine your baby's skin type is to look for the common signs of dryness and sensitive skin, including:

• Roughness
• Redness
• Tightness
• Flakiness
• Rashes

If your baby doesn't exhibit any of those signs, they likely have normal skin.

However, your little one may have different types of skin on different parts of their body. For example, they may have normal skin on their face and neck, dry skin on their elbows and knees, and sensitive skin on their wrists and chest.

It's also important to remember that your baby's skin is more sensitive than your own and may react to their environment more strongly (think: rough clothing, air pollution, and hot or cold weather).

While your baby's normal skin may be less reactive than dry and sensitive skin types, normal skin can still become irritated, inflamed, and uncomfortable.

Until about the age of two, all babies have an immature skin barrier. That means that even normal skin is very delicate, vulnerable to outside irritation, and can't necessarily maintain the proper level of moisture for all conditions.
