At the time of birth, a baby’s skin has not yet acquired all the properties of adult skin and will take 2 to 3 years to mature. The sebaceous and sweat glands are not functioning at full capacity at birth. Therefore newborns do not have an effective hydrolipidic film covering the skin surface. The anti-microbial defenses are not as effective.
The risk of absorption through the skin is much greater than that of an adult’s as a result of the higher absorption capacity of the epidermis. It is excessively permeable to chemical agents, hypersensitive to sun rays, and easily irritated.
Baby products must therefore be developed under very strict, very rigorous control and must undergo thorough laboratory testing.
The Mustela® Bébé line has been developed in close partnership with health care professionals; pediatricians, dermatologists, toxicologists and allergists. The formulations contain rigorously selected ingredients to ensure efficacy, skin tolerance and purity. Once the final formula is proven stable, in-vitro and ex-vitro tolerance and non-toxicity tests are conducted. Once the product has obtained a safety certificate from an independent toxicological expert, clinical studies are conducted in pediatricians’ or dermatologists’ offices to ensure high standards of quality and safety.
