General Questions

Why should I use specifically formulated products for my baby?
Babies have different skin care needs than adult because their skin is immature (more delicate, sensitive, thinner and more permeable). Products adapted to the needs of children's skin will ensure both the comfort and strength of your child's skin as it grows and develops. Mustela prides itself on a long history of development of products for the unique needs of both normal skin and skin with atopic tendencies.

Do your baby products contain parabens?
Our Bebe line contains the preservative parabens to promote the longevity and safety of these products. Amongst preservatives, parabens are the best known and the oldest, frequently used in food products, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. They are respected for their effectiveness in small doses and the high tolerance healthy skin has for them. This is why French and European scientific authorities have authorized their use in cosmetic products. Our Dermo-Pediatrics line does NOT contain parabens. These products are meant to be used on already delicate and compromised skin and parabens, as well as coloring and fragrance, have been left out of these formulas.

Does Mustela give away free samples?
Mustela provides many retailers with samples for consumers to try in-store. Look for our testers and sachets at your favorite Mustela retailers. We also have periodic promotions with give our consumers the opportunity to try samples of new products.

Can Mustela help with very itchy skin?
We have several products which treat dry skin. For mothers-to-be, we make Ultimate Hydration, which treats dry and itchy skin. Our Stelatopia line is excellent for the itchy skin of babies and children. Formulated for dry and eczema-prone skin, it consists of four products to be used in a regime that varies according to the severity of the condition. We make a Moisturizing Cream to be applied at least twice daily to dry skin, a Cream Cleanser as an alternative to abrasive soaps, a No-Rinse Cleanser for skin sensitive to hard water, and Milky Bath Oil for particularly harsh outbreaks of dry, itchy skin.

Does Mustela do animal testing?
We are sensitive to your interest in animal testing of cosmetic products. Our laboratories use alternative methods, recognized and validated, (in vitro tests: cell cultures, reconstructed epidermises) as substitutes for tests on animals, testing the safety of our finished cosmetic products. These strictly conform to current regulatory provisions at the European level.

Does Mustela have a multiple birth program?
Mustel offers a program for multiple births. However, we are happy to offer a one-time gift to the parents of twins, triplets, and other mutiple births. To receive a gift, fax a copy of each birth certificate within 6 months of the date of birth to 847-473-1889 or mail to:

Why are skin problems more common in the winter?
During the winter months, the cold weather and central heating are constantly drying the air, which factor in to dry skin. In winter, children's skin should be regularly moisturized, particularly prior to activities which reduce moisture in the skin (before going outside and before bed time as well as after bathing). For overly dry skin, we recommend our Cold Cream Nutri-Protector and Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream products.

What is cradle cap and how should I treat it?
Cradle Cap is flaky/dry skin that coats and covers parts of or the entire scalp and is the result of an excessive secretion of sebum and the proliferation of the micro-organism Malassezia Furfer. It generally does not cause discomfort to your baby. Mustela Foam Shampoo for Newborns is recommended for mild to moderate Cradle Cap. It is an extremely mild and tearless with gentle exfoliating properties. For more severe cases of Cradle Cap, we recommend our Stelaker product. Applying this cream before bedtime and washing off in the morning with the Foam Shampoo is our best regime for clearing Cradle Cap.

I was told that I can not give my baby a full bath until the rest of the umbilical cord is out (around fifteen days) and that I have to use cotton balls to bathe her. Is one of your products good for these first days of bathing?
We would recommend our Physiobébé product. It is a soap-free washing base that can be applied with a cotton ball to cleanse babies delicate skin. This product does not need to be rinsed and contains Aloe Vera to keep the skin moisturized and soothed.

Baby Product Questions

What is the difference between Mustela Foam Shampoo for Newborns and Baby Shampoo?
Mustela Foam Shampoo for Newborns contains ingredients that help to eliminate the excess sebum that causes cradle cap. Baby Shampoo is enriched with extracts of coconut and wheat protein to preserve the delicate balance of the scalp while chamomile soothes baby's tender scalp. Baby shampoo is ideal for older children with more hair.

Can Hydra Bebe Body be used on my baby's face as well as his body?
Yes, Mustela Hydra Bébé Body lotion can be used on your baby's face. We also make a product specifically for the face which is called Hydra Bébé Face.

What product do you have to help with severe baby acne?
Baby acne is a fairly common condition with no clear cause. The best way to treat it is to keep the skin clean, though you should be careful not to use any harsh products. We recommend PhysiObébé for it's soap-free, pH-balanced formula. It will dissolve and extract dirt while keeping the skin hydrated and soft.

Is your Musti Eau de Soin safe to use on newborns?
Our Musti Eau de Soin Spray is safe for your newborn. It is alcohol free and hypoallergenic. If you have a pre-mature birth baby,I would consult with your physician on when it would be safe to use. We have customers that use this product on their babies and themselves.

I read recently that phthalates found in some baby shampoos washes and lotions might be harmful. Do your products contain phthalates?
Reports have been circulating about a study published in February in the journal Pediatrics. The findings of this study focus on phthalate exposure in infants and babies. In the U.S., unlike in Europe, such compounds are not subject to specific regulation in cosmetics. Indeed, apart from diethyl phthalate (DEP) which is mainly used in fragrances, the other phthalates mentioned in the study are banned in Europe according to the European Cosmetic Directive, which regulates the safety of cosmetic products in Europe. Since Mustela products are manufactured in France, they comply with this European regulation. Thus, the phthalates mentioned in the American study are not introduced as such in our cosmetic products as ingredients.

Can I use cleansing cloths to cleanse my baby's face, and in particular his eyes?
Yes, if you use Facial cleansing Cloths with PhysiObébé, which have been specifically designed for cleansing a baby's face and the eyes where there are often secretions. They are soaked in PhysiObébé, a no-rinse cleansing fluid which guarantees high skin and eye tolerance and has been dermatologically and ophthalmologically tested. The cloths cleanse a baby's delicate skin in a single step and in total safety (including eyes and lips), leaving it clean, moisturized and soothed. They do not sting the eyes.

Can Stelatria be found in the U.S?
No, we do not currently sell Stelatria in the U.S, please check our website at a later date for updates.

Some of your products contain the DEA conjugate, cocamide-DEA, I have heard that this substance is linked with health problems, is this true?
No. Officials at the FDA say there is no reason for consumers to be concerned about any recent report linking the substance DEA (diethanolamine) with health problems. According to FDA Compliance Officers, parents have absolutely no reason to worry about using products containing DEA or conjugates of DEA.

My son breaks out in a rash behind his ears whenever I use a baby shampoo. My doctor suggested using Mustela because she wants him to have the mildest shampoo for sensitive skin, but there are so many choices which one do you suggest?
We have great products for baby's hair. The first question you have to answer is how thick is your baby's hair? If your baby has thick hair, and you need a little bit of conditioner you might want to try the 2-in-1 Hair and Body Wash. If your child has fairly thin hair, you should use the Dermo-Cleansing. If your child has cradle cap you might want to try our Foam Shampoo for newborns. The Baby Shampoo is also a good choice for older babies; it is an ultra-gentle shampoo that does not sting the eyes.

Is PhysiObébé antibacterial?
No, PhysiObébé is not antibacterial. PhysiObébé gently cleanses without rinsing. It contains aloe vera to moisturize and soothe, and allantoin to soothe and help heal wounds. It is pH-balanced and safe to use on the face. Unlike many other antibacterial no-rinse products, PhysiObébé does NOT contain alcohol and is therefore safe to use on infants.

Does your soap contain antibacterial ingredients and if not, why not?
Mustela soaps are not antibacterial. Many antibacterial products are too harsh for an infant's delicate skin, or they contain alcohol, which should be avoided as an infant's skin is thinner, making alcohol more readily absorbed by the body, but less effectively eliminated due to the baby's immature organs.

Future Mothers Questions

I am breastfeeding and recently have experienced sore cracked nipples. Does Mustela have a product to help me comfortably nurse my newborn?
Mustela makes a product called Nursing Comfort Balm which would be ideal for you. It is a gentle cream to be applied to the nipples as needed and is safe for nursing babies. Nursing Comfort Balm is also free of Lanolin.

I am five months pregnant and I started using Mustela's Stretch Marks Double Action at the beginning of my fifth month. I have not however used any breast cream and want to know if I may start using Mustela Specific Support Bust now?
You can start to use Specific Support Bust at any time. Apply to the lower neck and breasts twice daily. Continue to use the Stretch Marks Double Action on other areas such as hips, upper thighs and abdomen to prevent and minimize new stretch marks.

What is the difference between Stretch Marks Double Action and Stretch Marks Intensive Action?
Stretch Marks Double Action helps to prevent and treat new and recent stretch marks. It should be applied twice a day to all areas where stretch marks may appear. Stretch Marks Intensive Action helps to minimize existing stretch marks, six months to two years old. It should be applied twice daily to the stretch mark for three months.

I gave birth three weeks ago and I am breastfeeding, but I want to use some kind of product on my breast to prevent loss of firmness and stretch marks. What do you recommend?
We would recommend Mustela Specific Support Bust. This product helps promote firmness and prevent loss of skin elasticity which may occur during pregnancy. It soothes breast tightness and the sensation of stretching as a result of female hormones increasing breast size. This product can also be used during breast-feeding and is alcohol-free.

I am scheduled to have a cesarean section next week. Is Mustela Stretch Marks Intensive Action cream safe to use on my stomach area? How about around the incision?
Mustela Stretch Marks Intensive Action cream can be used before your cesarean, however, afterwards we recommend that you do not use it on your incision area until you have completely healed.

Are your maternity products safe to use during pregnancy? I am worried about the health of my fetus being harmed by cosmetic products.
Our entire M9M line has passed non-tertogenicity tests which look for effects on the fetus (except for Instant Comfort Legs, not tested). They are also compatible with sonograms. We have been careful in formulating these products for the health of both mother and baby.

I am a mother of a three year old and I have stretch marks. Are my stretch marks too old to be treated?
For already present stretch marks, we suggest Stretch Marks Intensive Action. Our clinical tests, however, were done on women who had given birth six months to two years previously. We have therefore not done tests on women as far removed from their pregnancies as you are. That said, you are certainly not far out of this range and I would say that it could certainly help, but that Mustela cannot currently produce any findings for this. NB: Our study involved two applications daily for twelve weeks.

Are the Mustela 9 Months products safe for use while breastfeeding?
Yes, all of our maternity products are safe to use while you are breastfeeding.

What product do you recommend I use for numerous and dark stretch marks after labor?
We would recommend Stretch Marks Intensive Action.

Sun Product Questions

Is your sunblock safe to use on newborn babies?
The FDA has approved the ingredients in our sunscreen for use on children six months and older. Mustela's High Protection Sun Lotion and Sun Cream for Sensitive Areas is safer for babies and young children because it is a 100% mineral and not a chemical sun block.

What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
UVA (Ultra-Violet A) rays accelerate skin aging. They penetrate deep into the skin, through the corneal layer and the epidermis, damaging the fibers and cells of the dermis by the free action radicals. UVB (Ultra-Violet B) rays cause sunburns. They act more directly on the skin's surface attacking cells of the epidermis. Accumulation of solar radiation during childhood is not a recognized cause of the onset of skin cancers during adult life.

I was wondering if the moderate sun protection stick is still available and if not why it was discontinued.
Unfortunately, we are no longer offering the sun stick. Because it was only an SPF 25, the decision was made to discontinue the product since it provided such low protection. Since a minimum of SPF 30 is recommended for children's skin, we urge you to try our SPF 50 products to better protect your child.

Are Mustela UV Protection lotions PABA free?
Yes. Mustela is PABA free. Our sunblocks contain a new generation of titanium and zinc oxide.

Problem Skin Questions

My baby has eczema, and scratches constantly. Is eczema a common problem among babies? Can I use the Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream to soothe his skin?
Yes, eczema is a common problem, especially amongst babies (about 20% have the condition). The Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream is formulated especially for babies and children with dry and eczema-prone skin. The Moisturizing cream restructures the skin, provides lipid-replenishment and quickly soothes the sensations of discomfort. Stelatopia Cream Cleanser and No-Rinse Cleansing Water clean the skin without drying and actually help to repair damaged skin. Stelatopia Milky Bath is ideal for flare-ups as it allows the child to bathe in comfort.

My baby has cradle cap, and according to his pediatrician, the red bumps on his face are also known as seborrheic dermatitis. I read somewhere that it is a form of Eczema, does that mean that I can use the Stelatopia Line of products?
Yes, the Dermo-Pediatrics line containing the Stelatopia products would be great for your baby's condition. They are specifically designed for dry and eczema-prone skin.

Is it safe to use the Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream on my baby's face for her eczema? My baby's eczema is on both cheeks, chin and upper lip.
Mustela's Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream is completely safe to use for the face and body. The entire Stelatopia line is intended for babies and children who have eczema-prone skin.

My baby has severe diaper rash and there is some oozing around this area. Can I use the Stelactiv on him?
When the skin around the diaper area is oozing, you never want to use ANY dermo-cosmetic products. You should consult a physician immediately.
