Your pregnancy and prenatal care
Your visit with an anesthesiologist
Whether or not you want an epidural, you are required to meet with an anesthesiologist at your hospital during the 8th or 9th month of pregnancy. Deliveries do not always go as planned and so you may need anesthesia.
The purpose of this visit is to provide you with information about the epidural and identify any contraindications to anesthesia. The anesthesiologist will review your medical file then ask you questions about your previous anesthetic history, your medical and surgical history, your allergies and related issues. S/he will then examine your back and particularly the lumbar region (lower back), where the epidural is injected. S/he will also talk about the epidural’s side effects and risks, so be sure to ask questions about anything that’s bothering you!
