Preparing older children for the arrival of a new baby
When the baby is born
- Carefully plan the first meeting between your older children and your newborn. Set aside a calm moment when no other visitors are around, as the attention the guests pay to the newborn can hurt the older children and create negative associations with this first contact. Let your children get to know their little brother or sister at their own pace, regardless of whether they seem curious, intimidated, wary or touched. If they act indifferent or go off to play without looking at the baby, respect their choice.
- Invite them to participate in or watch the baby care: diaper changes, baths, dressing and so on. You can also let them hold the baby, helping them with this if they are very young.
