Problem Skin Advice
Dry and eczema-prone skin - Follow daily rules for hygiene and protection recommended by your doctor as dry and eczema-prone skin is extremely delicate and sensitive.
Cleansing
Practical advice on cleansing babies with dry, eczema prone skin
  • The skin must be cleansed every day.
  • Prefer warm baths (95-97°F) to showers, as the heat of water or the force of a shower jet may irritate damaged skin.
  • Do not leave a child in the bath for too long.
  • Dry and eczema-prone skin must be cleansed gently, using appropriate products such as milky bath oil or a gentle, soap-free washing base.
  • The use of wash cloths should be avoided as they are too rough for the skin.
  • Wash your child gently. Do not irritate the skin by rubbing it dry, but pat it gently with a towel, instead.
Moisturizing
Practical advice on moisturizing advice on moisturizing babies with dry and eczema-prone skin
  • Daily moisturizing is indispensable:
  • Moisturizing products are the most suitable because they reinforce the skin barrier's function and reduce itchiness and thus the urge to scratch (thereby cutting down the risk of infectious agents developing in damaged skin).
  • Do not hesitate to moisturize your child's skin as often as seems necessary.
  • Give your child's skin lengthy massages, which will improve his well-being and the condition of his skin. Care for his skin even more assiduously during winter months.
Hygiene and Dietary Measures
Practical hygiene and dietary advice in caring for babies with dry and eczema-prone skin Prefer 100% cotton or silk clothing; avoid synthetic and wool fabrics that often cause itching. Regularly change underwear, pyjamas and nightshirts.

Ensure a favorable, airy environment:
  • Aerate the bedroom as much as possible and vacuum it regularly.
  • Do not overheat your home (room temperature should not exceed 70°F)
  • Ventilate rooms in both winter and summer and add a humidifier in the winter months.
  • Keep levels of house dust and dust mites as low as possible (Avoid fitted carpets, numerous soft toys, feather duvets, etc.). Special bed covers and aerosol products are available to combat dust mites.
  • Avoid the presence of pets
  • Avoid exposing your child to tobacco smoke.
Avoid using harsh detergent products:
  • In the washer, avoid soap flakes.
  • Avoid using excessive amounts of product. Use only phosphate-free, hypoallergenic* products.
  • Never use softeners
All foods that have been demonstrated as a cause for allergy, or identified as such in allergy tests, must be excluded from the child's diet.

Other useful measures:
  • Cut the child's nail regularly.
  • Vaccinations are not contra-indicated. They should be administered apart from times of flare-up.
  • Bathing in the sea or in pools is not contra-indicated once a flare-up is over.
